Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis joined the Army in August 2006. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan in
January.
Growing up on Staten Island, Staff Sgt. Michael Ollis dreamed of being like his father and grandfather and serving in the
U.S. Army.
βHe had olive-green blood,β as a longtime neighbor of the family, Jeff White, put it, referring to the traditional color of an
Army uniform.
Ollis was an ROTC student at the Michael J. Petrides School, enlisting shortly after graduating in 2006. He fought a
combat tour in Iraq and was in his second in Afghanistan when he was killed Wednesday in an insurgent attack in
Ghazni Province.
Not long before his death, the 24-year-old patriot learned he had been awarded the Bronze Star β just like his father.
